چکیده

Introduction Coastal floods account for a large proportion of the damage to life and property due to natural disasters world-wide. Out of the 15 greatest natural disasters in the world in terms of monetary losses between 2004 and 2008, 14 were coastal (Kron 2008). However, despite the enormity of a particular flood event, people often return to a flood-prone area after a disaster (Cigler 2007; Parker 1995). This necessitates a need for pro-active management of coastal flood systems. A coastal flood system may be thought of as a geographic unit comprising all natural and human elements potentially affected by coastal floods.

A holistic model for coastal flooding using system diagrams and the Source-Pathway-Receptor (SPR) concept

Coastal flooding is a problem of increasing relevance in low-lying coastal regions worldwide. In addition to the anticipated increase in likelihood and magnitude of coastal floods due to climate change, there is rapid growth in coastal assets and infrastructure. Sustainable and integrated coastal flood management over large areas and varying coastline types cannot be simply treated as local com...

An improved database of coastal flooding in the United Kingdom from 1915 to 2016

Coastal flooding caused by extreme sea levels can produce devastating and wide-ranging consequences. The 'SurgeWatch' v1.0 database systematically documents and assesses the consequences of historical coastal flood events around the UK. The original database was inevitably biased due to the inconsistent spatial and temporal coverage of sea-level observations utilised. Therefore, we present an i...

A Quasi-2D Bayesian network model for assessments of coastal inundation pathways and probabilities

Coastal flood assessments often require the analysis of a complex system of flood sources, pathways and receptors. This can be challenging for traditional numerical modelling approaches. In this paper we use a Bayesian networks approach to assess coastal floodplains as networks of inter-linked elements. A Bayesian network (Bn) model is built to describe flood pathways and estimate flood extents...

A web GIS based integrated flood assessment modeling tool for coastal urban watersheds

Urban flooding has become an increasingly important issue in many parts of the world. In this study, an integrated flood assessment model (IFAM) is presented for the coastal urban flood simulation. A web based GIS framework has been adopted to organize the spatial datasets for the study area considered and to run the model within this framework. The integrated flood model consists of a mass bal...

Combined Modelling of Coastal Barrier Breaching and Induced Flood Propagation Using XBeach

Breaching of coastal barriers is a three-dimensional process induced by complex interactions between hydrodynamics, sediment transport and soil avalanching processes. Although numerous coastal barriers are breached every year in many coastal countries, causing dramatic inundations of the nearshore areas, the understanding of the processes and interactions associated with both breaching and subs...
